Arrive

Residence permit

A residence permit is issued by the Aliens' Registration Office and entitles the holder to stay in Germany for a longer period of time and not only temporarily.

If you want to arrive in Germany and, above all, stay, you have to keep a few things in mind. (Symbol image)

Reasons for a residence permit

The residence permit is limited in time. You can apply for a residence permit for the following reasons:

  • education
  • for the purpose of studying, language course, school attendance
  • gainful employment
  • Residence permit for research purposes
  • Humanitarian, international law or political reasons
  • Family reasons
  • Searching for a training or study place
  • Job search for skilled workers
Note: You may only work in Germany if this is expressly stated in your residence permit.

A residence permit can be extended. Whether you have taken part in an integration course will also be taken into account. You will receive an electronic residence permit or a label.

  • the foreigner leaves the country for a reason that is not temporary in nature.
  • the foreigner leaves the country and does not return within six months or within the period specified by the foreigners authority.
