Temporary stay with a visa

A visa is an independent residence permit for the purpose of entering the Federal Republic and for the initial period of stay. The validity of a visa is therefore limited in principle.

Note: Anyone attempting to enter the country without a visa will be turned away at the border. Anyone who enters the country contrary to visa regulations or provides false information will not receive a residence permit. Foreigners who enter the country illegally will generally be sent back to their country of origin.

A visa is issued by the German diplomatic mission abroad (embassy/consulate) for short or long-term stays before entering the Federal Republic of Germany. For short stays, it can also be issued by the diplomatic mission of another Schengen country.
