Work permit

If you come from an EU country, you can take up a job or become self-employed in Germany. People from third countries can work in Germany if their residence permit allows it. Appropriate permits can be applied for at the Foreigners' Registration Office.

The Welcome Center staff can also help with questions regarding a work permit and know which office of the city administration is responsible.

Remarks in the residence permit

In each residence permit there are remarks concerning the work permit. Among others, the following remarks may be mentioned:

  • Employment permitted: you may work for an employer and/or be self-employed.
  • Employment permitted, self-employment not permitted:
You may be employed by an employer, but you may not become self-employed.
  • Gainful employment only permitted with permission from the immigration authorities:
Once you have found a job, apply for a work permit from the Aliens' Registration Office. Only when you have this, you are allowed to start working.
