Changed opening hours
Due to staff shortages at the vehicle registration and driving license office, it is currently not possible to fill all of the application acceptance desks. Unfortunately, this means that public service is restricted. Please therefore expect longer waiting times under certain circumstances. If the number of visitors is high, the vehicle registration and driving license office may close early. We ask for your understanding.
- Vehicle registrations and questions of any kind
- Exemptions from the helmet and seatbelt requirement
- Issuing of operating licenses
- Driving license matters
- Driving school and passenger transportation law
Since 02.11.2022, it is again possible to visit the driving license office as a walk-in customer. The office reserves the right to close or interrupt application acceptance early if there is a high volume of visitors. For driving license matters such as applications from professional drivers, transfer of foreign driving licenses, reissue after revocation of the driving license, extensions for commercial use or for entry of the key number B196, you must appear in person at the driving license office. In the case of appointments for ongoing procedures for the renewal of driving licenses, driving licenses for passenger transport or commercial passenger transport/driving schools/driving instructors, it remains mandatory to make an appointment in advance. In addition to the driving license office, the citizens' offices also offer numerous driving license matters that can be dealt with at the citizens' offices without making an appointment. These include in particular
- Issuing driving licenses
- Accompanied driving from 17, extension to motorcycle category (except B196)
- Class C, CE renewals (except in connection with key 95 or driver qualification certificate - FQN)
- Driving license changes (name, condition)
- Exchange
- Replacement issue
- International driving licenses
Due to the large number of tasks to be completed in the citizens' offices, there may often be longer waiting times. In addition, individual citizens' offices are often closed at short notice due to staff shortages. It is therefore recommended that you check which citizens' offices are open before going to the citizens' office:

You do not necessarily need an appointment to visit the vehicle registration office. However, if you arrive without an appointment, you may have to be prepared for considerable waiting times, especially in the early morning. There is no guarantee that you will be served. The office reserves the right to close or interrupt the application desk early if there is a high volume of people. To avoid waiting times, we therefore recommend that you make an appointment in good time.
Further information on making an appointment can be found under Vehicle Registration Office and Driving License Office: Making an appointment (opens in a new tab)
