The Urban Renewal Unit within the Urban Renewal and Housing Development Department is responsible for around 15 redevelopment areas designated under the Building Code. Here, urban development funds are used for the benefit of the districts and the city as a whole. The team of architects, social planners and administrative experts and takes an interdisciplinary approach, so that the measures to support and upgrade the areas cover a wide range of objectives.

Depending on the need, these include

  • the redesign of sidewalks, streets and squares
  • the creation or redesign of playgrounds and green spaces,
  • the creation or modernization of community facilities (district meeting places, museums, day care facilities for children, etc.)
  • the redevelopment of properties, where the preservation of existing buildings no longer makes sense,
  • but also the promotion of and advice on the modernization of buildings owned by private owners,
  • as well as the support of voluntary activities for the benefit of the city districts.

In addition to the implementation of the redevelopment measures, the tasks of the redevelopment area also include

  • the monitoring of the city as a whole for need of action for urban renewal. For this purpose, so-called urban renewal priority areas (SVG) are defined and updated,
  • carrying out comprehensive preparatory studies in the run-up to the application for funding and the formal designation of a redevelopment area,
  • providing support and assistance to tenants affected by redevelopment measures, and
  • and the acquisition and implementation of related funding opportunities, such as the "non-investment urban development funding" program in several areas.
